Whether it's the latest fad diet or a popular free diet plan, all of the advertising and the confusion of which diet works best, we wanted to develop a systematic way to evaluate diet plans and programs to help you decide which diet is actually the best.

We evaluate popular diets based on rating of 8 different aspects and then a combined score.  We also provide you a list of the things we liked and what we didn't like.  Below is the typical review format for each program, to see specific diets, click on the diet program to get our evaluation.  To learn more about our ratings and our scoring system click on our review method.

What is the diet? Founded by Jean Nidetch in 1962,  Weight Watchers is a points based system where points are assigned for each food based on fat, fiber and calorie content and each person is set a points target for each day and they can eat any variety of food that adds up to that total, each person is responsible for meeting their own targets. Weekly group sessions help keep dieters engaged and encouraged.

What we liked? Large support network, effective fundamentals of the program, gradual and steady weight loss is encouraged, flexibility of the points system to allow any foods to be eaten. The unique point system is readily found on numerous products and in several restaurants. Like most support network systems, highly effective.

What we didn't like? Weight Watchers is not cheap and is one of the most expensive programs reviewed.  The group sessions are encouraging in the beginning but sometimes become tiresome.  Lastly, many locations seem to push products rather than promoting weight loss.

Overall: Weight Watchers is a world class weight loss program and has long been a tried and true program.  If you are willing to pay for it and to attend the group sessions, Weight Watchers is a highly effective program.
